Many non-Filipinos are not aware of our Debut celebrations and why they are special to our young women. Filipino girls celebrate their eighteenth birthday with a Debut that has marked similarities to a quinceaneara event, retaining the Spanish influenced elements of a court and a dance with a traditional waltz.

Sweet 15 Dresses

A Filipino Debut gives a teenage girl the opportunity to dress up like a princess in a fabulous dress, while the girls of her court have a wonderful range of damas dresses to choose from. It represents the single occasion when a girl can go to town with a fabulously lavish dress, only rivaled by her choice of dress on her wedding day. Quinceanera, or Sweet 15 dresses are the magnificent gowns most girl dream of as a fantasy dress, elaborate and ornate, with figure hugging bodices and voluminous ball gown skirts. They are traditionally worn by girls of Latin heritage to celebrate the rite of passage that comes with a fifteenth birthday. The tradition is celebrated throughout much of South America and has transitioned to a North American celebration retained by families with a Latino cultural heritage.

A similar tradition is also celebrated in the Philippines due to the Spanish influence of the islands dating back to the 16th century.

No matter where one celebrates this traditional coming of age, from Mexico and Guatemala, to Florida or the Philippines, there are some stunning online dresses to make a selection from. Prestigious fashion houses, like the House of Wu, Mori Lee and Marys Bridal each feature breathtaking ball gowns, creating an impossible task when it comes to making a selection as each individual line is so striking and beautiful. The choice is further complicated by the decision to opt for a three-piece quinceanera dress or a dress complemented with a matching bolero.

Father and Daughter Dance

From Debut by Juan Carlo, “The father and daughter dance is probably one of the most loved traditions in any Filipino debut. It signifies the daughter’s first step into womanhood and the father’s acceptance of the fact. I know a lot of fathers have that tendency to slip into denial that their little girl’s already grown up, so it’s truly heart warming to see father and daughter take the dance floor and share a slow dance together. There’s a lot of father-daughter songs that you can use so choose one that is close to both your hearts.”

Debut dresses with detachable ball gown skirts revealing fitted miniskirts appeal to girls who want to let their hair down and party after the formal dancing. The House of Wu 26841 three-piece dress features a beaded sleeveless crop top, a short fitted skirt and a detachable iridescent chiffon ball gown skirt adorned with horsehair trimmed ruffles. The crop top and short skirt can be paired with other pieces after the party.

Typically a formal dress will showcase a strapless beaded bodice with a sweetheart neckline, a lace-up back and a basque waist, though designs do vary. Gloriously full skirts always cascade in a luscious style and are often embellished with lace appliques or beading, ruffles or pick-ups. Many of the ball gown skirts finish in an elaborate train, adding to the magnificence of the dress.

We found that styles can vary between girlish and pretty, to the dramatic. The Mori Lee Vizcaya 89122 black cherry strapless dress really exudes drama with its sequin accented ruffled skirt, its intricately beaded bodice with an illusion halter neckline and corset back.
